The Rickshaw Race
I was in Bidar in third year of civil engineering. The students were mostly Sikhs and from Delhi side. There was no feeling that we were in the south except for the fact that when we visited the local hotels we were served with south Indian food which reminded us that we are about 1000 miles from Delhi. I remember that day when our term end tests were over and we had decided to go for a movie in the night ,the typical 9 to 12 night show which was student dominated. Some were from very rich backgrounds of landlords and did not thus hesitate to spend and give heavy tips to the waiters and the rickshawalas and at times did not take the balance money back from them saying,” Aish karo”(Enjoy yourself) to them as a result of which they would serve them happily in return. They were also fond of drinking which had formed a custom. After the movie was over we all came out and it was a pleasant night at about 0030h the next day. Some were high and they were wanting to do something funny as were still feeling restless. There were some rickshawwalas waiting at the corner of a crossing. NP Singh ,one of the leading drunkard of our college called one of them and asked him to call all his other friends also and soon there were about 10 of these rickshaws standing expecting to get some money for doing some funny act as demanded by NP singh. He told them after consulting all of us that we would conduct a rickshaw race now and whosoever comes back after touching the second crossroad located about half a km away would be given Rs 500/- as the price. The moment he said this all the rickshaws immediately stood in line and tightened their lungis(Cloth worn on the lower part of the body ) and were in the get ready position .
“OK ! One ,two and three” NP Shouted and waived off his hand with a handkerchief and off they catapulted applying all their strength on the pedals ; a sight worth watching with empty rickshaws running amok.
Now as they left the start point and were nearing the second crossing, NP started off
“Liyaoo oye paise kaddo”(Come! Everyone peel off some money),said NP to all of us in Punjabi so that the price money as promised could be handed over to the winner when he returns as NP had expected that everyone would contribute some part of it in order to make the sum total of Rs 500/- but no one took out anything as most of us had already finished off in the interval of the movie or were not wanting to. NP tried one more time from everyone and when there was no response he said,
”We will have one more race amongst all of us”, and everyone took off to heels in the other direction in that one sided race never to be seen again there for the rest of the night.
